Who are we?

Brief history of the Shogen-Dojo Zurich.

When the Japanese Zen-Master Sokei-an Sasaki at the beginning of the last century arrived in the West, he mastered his situation by living the life of a Zen monk in a small flat in the centre of New York and teaching laymen the understanding of Zen and its everyday use. He called his flat "hermitage".

Years later one of his disciples, Dr Henry Platov, Chikuen Kugai Osho, introduced the same spirit to Zurich and taught it to a growing number of followers in a small flat. In 1975 they founded the Rinzai Zen Society inwitzerland. A long-lasting connection with the Zen-Monastery Shogen-ji in Ibuka / Japan led to the foundation of the Shogen-Dojo Zurich. Through Eido Shimano Roshi it is also closely connected with the Dai Bosatsu Zendo Kongo-ji in Livingston Manor, USA. The Shogen-Dojo is situated at Aegertenstrasse 6 and open to all interested parties.

At the Dojo, also called Zendo, Zazen - sitting meditation - is practised as well as Kinhin and Samu, - walking and working with mindfulness and devotion. Besides numerous 1-day sesshins the 5-day summer sesshin with Eido Shimano Roshi from New York provides an opportunity to intensive deepening.

The Dojo is managed by Shokan Marcel Urech, who is an ordinated Rinzai Zen Monk and disciple of Eido Shimano Roshi for the last 14 years.
